Asia Argento was born in Rome, Italy, into a family of actors and filmmakers. Both are careers she herself has been pursuing. Sogni e bisogni, directed by Sergio Citti and starring Asia Argento, at nine, was her debut film. She played the lead in the film as Cristina Comencini in her first film Zoo in 1989. Michele Soavi directed The Church 1989. In 1989, she was Nanni Moretti's (also directed) daughter in Red Wood Pigeon. Close Friends (written and directed by Michele Placido) was when Asia's acting career truly started to blossom. Her roles went from very young before becoming more mature. The film was a hit during the Cannes International Film Festival. The film, Trauma (1993), she was the first to work with her father, well-known Italian horror director Dario Argento (her mother is one of Argento's favorite actresses, Daria Nicolodi, playing an obese girl on the lookout of her parents' murderer. The Phantom of the Opera is the third time she has collaborated with her father. The others are Trauma as well as The Stendhal Syndrome. Giuseppe Piccioni's Condannato A Nozze showcased Asia's absorbed way that she exhibited in her playing. She appeared as Arianna in the film Perdiamoci by Carlo Verdone di vista, a role which was so complicated that she received the David di Donatello Award for best actress. Patrice Chereau was her director in Queen Margot the film, in which she was a major character. In 1995, her collaboration alongside Michel Piccoli, in Peter Del Monte's Traveling Companion won her yet another award, this time the David di Donatello and Grolla di Oro. Asia took up directing as profession in 1994. Her first short film was Prospettive. A documentary she created about her dad was followed by Abel/Asia (1998) which was a movie that was awarded a prize at the Rome Film Festival in 1998. They were each produced between 1996 and 1998. Asia began directing her first feature-length film in 1999, with Scarlet Diva (2000). The film also featured her as the principal performer, as well as the creator of the film's script. In May of 2000, the film was released both in Italy and around the globe. The film was honoured by the Williamsburg Festival in Brooklyn, New York. Anna Lou, her first child, was born to her in 2001. She has directed numerous music videos. In 2002 Asia appeared on The Red Siren with Jean Marc Barr, and Rob Cohen's Action thrille directed with Vin Diesel. Asia has also written some short stories which were published in a variety of magazines.
